sass queen

I feel like its been 300 years since I've sat down to have a one sided chat with you all! How's it going? I'll assume everything is fabulous. If not, shoot me an email or something. Lets fix that.

It looks like I've gone to new blogging lengths with this one, first running around a school on a weekend and now a carpark before opening hours. True glamour right here. This is a fairly classic Savannah outfit, with the classic bandana and choker combination. I may or may not have impulse bought this skirt at a Glue Store sale but I feel like a sass queen and a girl in The Body Shop complimented me on it so no regrets, right? It's actually so true that girls just dress for compliments from other girls. I'd also like to point out, which I feel I must always do now because it's become such a rarity, is that I'm not wearing my Converse. Whaaaaat? I'm going to be honest, that I do regret because real shoes are not comfortable no matter how much of a boss you look.

In terms of actually interesting things about my life, I've been devoting a lot of time to my new years resolutions of 'reading more books' and 'drinking more tea'. Current favourites are Me and Earl and The Dying Girl (because I'm still in the funny first chapters and not the soul crushing, bitter end) and T2 Coco Berry. Sailing has been in the mix lately too which is a little bit fun. I'm also in the midst of giving up chocolate 25% for Lent purposes and 75% for health purposes, which is (thankfully) getting easier by the day. I've found a real love for grapes but the countdown till Easter is still going strong. It's 32 days if you're also in this sweet struggle.

But honestly, what is really making my life right now is you guys. I've been getting so much positive feedback lately about ZOLA and I seriously can't stress how much that means to me. It's like a giant hug from the internet. Keep on keeping on sharing and commenting and getting in contact, because you're fab and I love you almost more than chocolate itself. As you know, I'm delving into Youtube more and more. I have some exciting things on the cards, and if there is anything you want to see let me know in the comments, via email or on my Instagram. Have a great week!

If I'm honest, I've been putting off writing this all week. I've been putting off thinking a title for this all week. I've been putting off pretty much everything productive. Let me put it this way, I've read 9 pages of my novel for English and 148 pages of Tyler Oakley's biography. The thing is I'm on holiday. The thing about holidays is that no matter how much free time you have, and no matter how many good intentions you have, nothing productive is going to happen. I know this because I am this, and because there is currently a very convincing voice in my head saying 'savor summer, lets go market shopping and swimming and forget about the impending doom that is year 11.

So here's me and my weekly musings from a place where I'm too relaxed to say something profound, a place that looks a lot like the inside of a cozy beachside motel. In amongst my doing nothing I've been doing a lot of swimming and wearing tie dye clothing. There's something about wearing every colour at once that just gets me going.

Actually, I lie. This weeks profound-ity (which I find much better than a profanity) is to always get out of the car. It's to accept adventure on the odd chance you might enjoy it. This shirt, which is possibly my favourite thing in the world right now, I bought in Newton in a store I never would have entered by myself, only minutes before attempting (and hilariously failing) an advanced yoga class. Why? Because my beautiful friend and number 1 ZOLA fan invited me, and I said yes. Ily by the way, consider this your official shoutout.

Speaking of goodness, I got my Ls since last weeks installment which is majorly exciting! As much as I'd love to I can't yet drive to cool photography spots like this one. I've hit a top speed of 10kmph. Watch out Sydney siders, a soon to be crappy parallel parker is coming soon to an indie cafe car park near you!!

Hello chickens! I know it has been a ridiculously long time since you've heard from me, but after a long hour in the Apple store I am back with a laptop that actually turns on! Life is good, and I am in the full swing of holiday bliss. It's the time for vintage t-shirts and high waisted shorts, for realising my beautiful nikes are highly impractical and should be used for casual outfits and not for actual sport. What a visionary I've become.

If you're following my Instagram (@zolablog) you'll know I've spent most of my week at the beach, mainly because I scored a Tigerlily bikini as an early Chrissie present. I can't help but feeling I've started a beautifully dangerous and expensive love affair. But what can I say, I'm wonderfully sunburnt and content with my life. It's worth mentioning this is partly because of white chocolate macadamia frozen yoghurt, which I tried for the first time yesterday. Seriously, who needs functioning relationships. I have white chocolate macadamia frozen yoghurt now. I need a cute couple nickname for that, it's just too long. Chocodamia? I'm feeling that.

In other news, my throat is slowly but surely closing in on itself after multiple nights of belting Taylor Swift across living rooms. Yep, multiple. Apologies my dear friends. Thank you for putting up with my uncontainable obsession for a bit of T-Swizzle.

Oh and incase you were wondering, yes I did break into a high school for this. I did pretend I was watching a preschool ballet concert with my mum and my tripod, all before coming home and binge watching the baddest show on television. Winners and Losers. I think I've reached a new level of wreck-less abandon, someone pls call the police.

So yes, that's what my world has come to since we last spoke. How I've missed this bloggy goodness! If there's anything you'd like to see here on Zola be sure to hit me up in the comments or email me at savannahhughes00@gmail.com.

Love always,

Teen Angst

The thinking part of the year is officially over, and I can feel my brain slowly but surely slipping out my butt. My days have been reduced to woeful motivational talks, which are essentially grade wide team building exercises. I always thought I'd have to wait to get a job before I endured this but no! I spent my day with a small, rat looking man screaming enthusiastically at a bunch of overtired teens.
'EYEEEBALLS!!' He demands, trying to connect to the audience, wiping the litres of sweat from his face.

So lets take on the role society has given me: the unenthusiastic, self absorbed and ultimately moody teenage gal. I'll take my teen angst out on the world with messy street art, unhealthy amounts of Gossip Girl, and grunge inspired outfits. I'm real moody man.*proceeds to apply another coat of eyeliner* Going to be honest though, I am loving this retro grunge thang. I'm sure there will be more around here soon.

Apologies for this one being a little short, I was literally sprung by torrential rain while shooting this, and was forced to do an awkward high-heeled converse, tripod and camera dash back to me mums car. Yeah guys, my life is just as glamorous as you all think it is (very.) Speaking of glamour, before the next time we speak I'll be on a bus into the middle of the wilderness where I may or may not die, all in the name of outdoor education. I'm talking hiking, tents, drop toilets and Katmandu clothing. Oh yeah. Glamour is my middle name.

100% Happy

I had so much cool stuff planned for Zola and I just haven't got it done. I've had such a roller-coaster week. There are no words to describe how ready I am for the holidays. But right now, it's Sunday night. I've just made a pretty fab playlist, my English homework is done, I'm writing a blog post and life is so good.

Yesterday I took my Boarding school buds into the city for a little adventuring. I would like to point out I am never the one that is trusted with directions, but yesterday I was. It lead to a super fun day of wandering in circles in search of ice cream vans and other various tourist sites. I think I may have found a new partner in (photography) crime... Enjoy these spontaneous photos from yesterday, and pls embrace the weird lighting - sincerely, your favourite photography rookie @nikkithorn. I just couldn't resist this cool alley we found in Chinatown. There's something about aimless circling and overalls that makes me 100% happy. Hopefully the previously mentioned cool stuff I have planned will be on Zola this weekend - that is if my 18 hours of musical rehearsal doesn't kill me first. Have a good one sweet potatoes - and don't forget to follow Zola here xx

Afternoon Light

I'm not a person to dread Mondays, but yesterday was a fairly dreadful one. I had a 2 hour science exam. I do not like science. I do not like exams. I cannot concentrate for 2 hours straight.

Thankfully, my weekend was actually seriously better than my Monday (obviously!!). I recruited my legendary friend-gone-photographer Aimee and ventured out of my bedroom to take these photos in the beautiful afternoon light. Real photos and a dress I received in the mail!? I'm livin' the life now guizzz. I'm also slowly teaching my ridiculously short legs to walk in heels. #winning

After wearing this dress, I've decided velvet is a must this winter - its so flipping regal!! Also seriously loving these sleeves for keeping the chilled boho vibes going as the temperature inevitably drops. Dreaming of a stress free life... Wishing exams would finish sooner...

On a brighter note, it looks like I've found a place to express how hilarious I think I am! Twitter! I sat on the couch laughing at my Alex Perry tweet for a solid 5 minutes both before and after I posted it. If you have no idea what I'm talking about or you actually think I'm as funny as I think I am go follow me on Twitter @zolablog. I don't have a whole bunch of Twitter friends yet, so say hi and I'll totally follow you back.

Study calls, so I'm signing off but I hope you all have a great week. Remember - live each day like you're wearing a dress made of velvet because honey - you're a queen xo

Sunshine

~ They sacrificed their futures so we could have ours. Our freedom, our blessed life, our very own sunshine.  ~

I took these photos over the weekend, prior to a fantastic day enjoying delightful chats with delightful peeps, cozy cafes, books and bathtubs.

As you can tell by my rad choice of filter, I'm obsessing over this jumper from All About Eve. Can I just say how happy I am that turtlenecks are back? Having a warm neck and looking good doing it - priceless. The killer mustard colour is also making me feel the 70s chilled vibes. Don't know if I'm even in the right era, but just go with it.  I'd also like to point out that it is officially no longer warm enough to wear a skirt. I learnt that one the hard way.

Australia also commemorated ANZAC Day over the weekend. I can't say I gave too much thought to 'ANZAC Day'. War just seems like such an adult issue, something that happened so long ago. I couldn't help but feel it was a bit irrelevant. We had a special assembly at school yesterday and something was said that really struck something with me. It was this: They sacrificed their futures so we could have ours.

There were 8709 Australians that died during the Gallipoli campaign. Eight thousand. Seven hundred. And nine. So many lives, families, futures totally ripped apart. Doesn't it seem like a waste? That's what I always thought.

But that made me think, what if they didn't? Where would we be? Maybe we wouldn't have this freedom. We wouldn't have the unique spirit of Australia, a country, somewhere to belong and live and thrive. Guys, we are just so blessed and most of the time we don't even notice it. We have so much, let's appreciate it. Let's take a hold of our futures and make something of ourselves. If not for anything else, but for the ANZACs and their families. Without them, who knows where we would be.

 ~ Lest we forget ~

Free Spirit

Savannah Wears
Dress - Avalon Markets (Brand Unknown)
Shoes - Converse
Watch - Ice

Yesterday I went back to school. Yesterday I got drenched. (Not quite as drenched as I got today as I waited for my bus with no umbrella...) Yep, here are the days of running across campus with icy water dripping down my back as I try to save my notebooks. But here are also the days of binging left over easter chocolate, sipping apple crumble tea (best purchase I've made yet!) and dreaming up wonderfully wintry outfits for this here blog. I'm also just discovering the joys of reading in bed and listening to the rain outside. There are so many books on my list right now, I'm considering not even leaving my warm bed all winter long.

I know that picture is very far from my lovely sundress in my photos, but we had a random heatwave before this awful rain. I thought I'd send you some summer vibes from my holidays with this free spirited outfit post. I just love the print and style of this dress! Yep, I'm still obsessed with navy and converse.

OMG! While shopping over the holidays I found wedge heel converse. I think I'm in love. I'm just going to put it out there - Wedge converse coming soon to zolablog.com.

I did do my fair share of shopping these holidays, found some great cafes and had the best time hanging out in the city with my friends. Oh also, what a blast from the past! I made a Club Penguin account with a friend, because we're more twelvie than you. It's like my whole childhood preserved in an Internet Explorer window. If you're looking for something worthwhile to do with your Tuesday night, add us @reeceysweg. We can play penguin Jujitsu like the kool kidz we are.

So excited for Term 2! How is your first week back going?

P.S. Are you on Pinterest? I've been loving Pinterest lately! You can follow me here xo

Floral Minded

Savannah Wears
Dress - T By Bettina

Let me set the scene. I'm sitting on a mini bus, chugging along a main road. My little headphones are trying desperately hard to overpower the funk blasting from the radio. It's 7:31am and the skies are grey, getting ready for another day. This is my crazy life now, and I'm loving it!

I've been super busy this year, so I've had a lot less time for blogging which is really sad. I'm doing a lot of sport, which is very different for me but I'm having a surprisingly good time. I'm playing touch football, and we had our semi final on Friday. We were 2 down at half time, then we ended up tying and going into 'drop off'. I had no idea what this was, but turns out they take a player off each team every 2 minutes until someone scores. We ended up scoring with 3 players left!! I've gotta admit this had little to do with me, because I hurt my finger in training but I'm so proud of the team and excited for our final this week!

I'm also taking classes in film photography, which is proving very cool. It's different to what I was expecting, but it's interesting learning to play with light and developing negative images. Once I add a few more photos to my portfolio, I'd love to share them with you!

I've also discovered some awesome music lately. My bus driver has a slight obsession with Triple J which I can say is definitely broadening my taste in music... When I can be bothered to try and overpower the radio, I'm listening to a band called Paradise Fears, The Broods, and Imagine Dragons new album Smoke and Mirrors.

So now for this actual outfit. I've had this dress for a while, and I can't get over how great the print is!! Its a perfect geometric colourful floral wonderfulness that I can't describe any other way. It also has gorgeous cut outs at the back. This is my go to formal outfit.

I went to my first 21st on the weekend and it was so lovely. The house looked incredible, and there were touching speeches and the cutest childhood photos. I just really enjoyed celebrating the milestone, and seeing just how much we can all do in 21 years.

Although I'm tired, and everything is a little crazy I can't help but feel so lucky. Lately I've been trying to be thankful for all the little things, because this life really is so incredible. We've got Lindt hot chocolate, music, and people. People are my favourite.

Moral of the post: try new things and find happiness in appreciation. Sorry not sorry for the super long-ness! Till next week xo Also, be a legend and like the Zola Facebook page here :))
